| How it works:
This medication acts as an inhibitors for the histamines that are produced in the body and cause allergic reactions. Chlorpheniramine may relieve symptoms such as watery eyes, urticaria, runny nose, itchiness, sneezing and may also be used to relieve common symptoms of the flu or cold.
Dosage:
Chlorpheniramine is given orally. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian
Suggested doses are as follows:
Dogs and Puppies all weights 1/2 to 2 tablets every 8 to 12 hours Cats and Kittens all weights 1/4 to 1/2 tablet every 8 to 12 hours
Side Effects:
Chlorpheniramine has side effects. It is a sedative, but is weaker than any other antihistamines, which is why it is preferred by many vets. Chlorpheniramine may cause:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Dry mouth and mucous membranes
- Constipation
- Difficulty urinating
- Vision problems in rare cases
Make sure your pet is not allergic to chlorpheniramine or other antihistamines, as it may cause a shock
Cautions:
There are possible negative interactions with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian. Chlorpheniramine is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine however, it is a commonly accepted practice to use this medication in dogs and cats. Do not open or crush the long-acting capsules.
